Follow-up: Bella

In this post, I yanked on all your puppy heart strings and became “that blogger” that decided to feature their beloved 4-legged (in this case, that’s a bad joke) furry friend. Only thing is that a) I’m so not that person and b) it was for a reason.

Bella, our english bulldog, is almost a year old now. During the summer months, Bella was the highlight of the boys’ day. They would spend so much time chasing her in circles, playing tug-o-war and fetch. She was not only a treadmill, but their best friend.

Then, one evening, I let her inside and noted she was limping. Not like “oh. poor thing hurt her foot”, but in a more concerning fashion that seemed to say “ok. someone HAD to of pulled something”. She moaned and whimpered that night.

Eventually, this led us to her Doggy Doctor and one craptastic diagnosis: our brand new puppy had hip dysplasia - in both back hips.

Solution: double surgery.

We eventually bit the bullet, and opted for surgery. Only thing? Bella got a respiratory infection - one that actually almost killed her before surgery was even an option. She spent the better (..or worse) part of 2 weeks admitted to the Doggy Hospital.

A formerly active puppy that was unable to breathe, unable to walk and was not at home. Poor thing.

She eventually had her surgery. It was brutal. The stitches, seen in the post above, were gross and hard to deal with. After about a week, she got an infection, which was drained (yuck) and treated.

At first, we really thought she was doing ok. We had been told she would likely not put any weight on that side at first (we were only able to do one leg at a time due to both the previous infection and the extent of the damage), but to our pleasant surprise, she’d use it to hobble.

Then, she stopped.

It was hard on her - no running, can’t jump and the boys could barely touch her. She was in pain and had been for awhile. In short - she became depressed and started regressing on her progress. Eventually, she stopped using the leg all together.

However, out of nowhere, she got better. Her spirits lifted and she re-gained use.

Now? Well, I “gained” her in the divorce. Seeing as I live in an apartment, I’m not sure if that’s an asset or not, but none the less, she’s mine.

One, big, slobbery, shedding bulldog. One that can run though, and kinda jump and if she’d stop eating everything, I’m sure the boys would love her.

Oh, Bella : An Update

A few weeks back I told you about our puppy, Bella (the bulldawg (spelling here is crucial. We live in Alabama), who is also known as “Bulla” by Chase), and her INSANE story involving a 10-month old puppy having lost complete use of her back two hips.

In short, her hip dysplasia meant bone-on-bone for both legs and surgery was the only option.

But, as soon as we took her in, Bella came down with an upper respiratory infection. One, that within days, turned into her needing hospitalization for a full week. She’s a fighter, thank goodness, and recovered enough to have her surgery rescheduled for this past Friday.

It was a DOOZY of procedure - she was in surgery for over 4 hours.

But on Saturday, we were able to come visit.

Y’all, she was high as a kite. But it was amazing to see her face, and I hope she realized we were there.

They could only do one hip, and she will be “a three-legged dog” (vet’s words) for a while. This will require extensive physical therapy and patience on both her part, myself and the boys. Part of why we wanted the boys to see her incision was for them to FULLY grasp that she didn’t just “go see the doctor”. She had major surgery - surgery that is going to require them to change the entire way they interact with their favorite outdoor playmate.

It’ll be rough on them, on her, and all of us, but this face? Totally worth it.

As you can tell, her tongue is too large for her mouth. :)

She comes home late Monday (at best). Keep her in your doggy prayers/thoughts/jujus/magic dust!

Oh, Bella.

From Drop Box

This past weekend, I noticed our puppy, Bella, was limping. She was also whining and not as active as normal. Come Monday, we took her to the vet and I was assuming she’d come home with some sort of “sports injury” as a diagnosis.

Sadly, I was very, very off.

Bella, only around 9-10 months old, has hip displasia on both back legs. On her right side, she has absolutely no liagment left. The hip is bone on bone with no socket. On the left side, it’s very similar, but she does have a little, yet dwindling quickly, of a socket formation.

This is a genetic disorder for bulldogs, but Bella’s case is progressing rapidly and far too early in her life.

My bulldog, the one that’s brought the boys nothing but joy, entertainment and love this entire summer, will never be the same again.

She will undergo surgery, yes, on Tuesday. We will see months of rehab for her in hopes that she’ll run again. Jumping, however, may be out of the question.

It brings me to tears to think of our world without her so soon. Not only would I be crushed without her adorable face, but the boys would shatter. She is their sibling, in a lot of ways. Playing soccer for hours, she’d take the ball and the boys would run in circles after her, giggles in tow.

Not going to lie, I hate most people’s “LOOK AT MY DOG!” posts. No one loves your dog like you. But Bella… she is special. And she doesn’t deserve this.

So as silly as it is, please keep her in your thoughts/prayers/jujus. She has a tough road ahead.

Baby In The Hallway... And The Bulldog In A Crate

Friday & Saturday must have been EXTREMELY hard on everyone in the house. Might I present my examples:

1) I found this in the hallway:

2) Which matches this:

(Bella finally had her eye surgery… she is um… recovering well. Lots of sleep and whatnots. Or just being a bulldog… ::eyeroll::)

3) Because against all odds and medical-crap-ness and etc I was *somehow* able to drink these:

From Drop Box

But not without a price because the next day I went to McWane Center with the kids, got a ticket on the way, wanted to CRY (after having fun) because I was utterly EXHAUSTED, yet still had to drive home 2 hours. So on Saturday night (after working in the hot sun for 6ish hours), I fell asleep at 8:15.

… exactly.

And I barely remember half of the day.

This has absolutely nothing to do with my semi-topic, but it was damn cool.
